My Hummus Obsession Ends Here: The Best Hummus Recipe, Ever

My Hummus Obsession Ends Here: The Best Hummus Recipe, Ever

I am absolutely, completely, hopelessly, ridiculously obsessed with hummus. I, like actress, Natalie Portman crave hummus and have the ability to eat my body weight in hummus (yes, that’s my pop culture reference for today.) My hummus obsession is attributed to my mother and my favourite restaurant, Nuba.

Princess & the Pea Crostini

Princess & the Pea Crostini

I hate peas.

Or at least I think I hate peas.

For as long as I can remember, peas, even just the word itself, caused me distress. They would make appearances in rice or in various Indian dishes like carrot sabji or aloo mattar (potato and pea) dahl. I would cringe and feel repulsed.

In my mind, they were these weird greyish green orbs that had a leathery skin. Their texture was starchy and when my spoon scooped them up – they would become mushy. It was obvious, I disliked them. Any peas that hit my plate, would be picked out or pushed to the side.

Aromatic Creamed Beet Greens

Aromatic Creamed Beet Greens

I have expressed my admiration for spinach in previous posts, but this fall has produced a bounty of beets and beet greens. So I am switching my veneration away from spinach and towards the humble beet and beet greens.

People say beets taste like metal, mud, wood, even dirty socks. (Yes, I have friend who confessed that last one to me, which makes me laugh). Please stop hating on beets. They are delicious in so many ways.

Even if you really don’t like beets. Rather, even if you kind of hate them and possibly dread the thought of eating them, you’ll love this recipe. It’s an easy way — a first step of sorts — to gain some appreciation for the beet, by using the greens.

Mouthwatering Pickled Cherries

Mouthwatering Pickled Cherries

Pickling, home canning, or “putting up” is something I covertly delight in. Pickling of any kind, channels my inner Martha Stewart. As an old school technique born out of pre-refrigeration necessity, pickling conjures up happy thoughts about simplicity and home. There was an entire summer where I focused on learning the art of pickling and canning. I learned the basics, made many mistakes, but my takeaway was a revival of nostalgic interests.

I find it delightful that with pickling, I can literally bottle up summer and store it in a jar. I get to enjoy the pickings of summer throughout the year. Acting as a postcard from summertime, “putting up” offers the ability to make and share idiosyncratic, pretty things. It offers hope and optimism, during dark, grey wintery days. Something, I think we all kind of need.

Watermelon and Peanut Chaat Salad

Watermelon and Peanut Chaat Salad

Deep inside, I know that fall has officially arrived. The weather is chilly and pumpkins and apples are everywhere. But my mind — my heart, and stomach — aren’t quite ready to let go of summer. They never really are.

The upside of these warmish October days is that my parents’ garden still has tomatoes. Yes, delicious roma plums. They don’t taste as juicy and delicious as say in August, but they help to console my longing for summer produce. During the hot days of August, the tomatoes are deep red, juicy and intense in flavor. There are Beefsteaks, Roma Plums, Grape, Cherry, and so many Heirloom varieties. Each has their own flavour and personality. They are a tomato lover’s proverbial heaven.
