Blackberry Ginger Cardamom Scones

Picture it in your mind, wild blackberries ready for the picking in an urban setting. Its kind of mind bending, especially for someone like me, who doesn’t immediately think of urban wild food foraging. While I may not be inclined to attempt it myself, I can’t help but notice all the people who are picking wild blackberries along Cambie Street, or parking their bikes at Stanley Park Seawall to gobble up a few. I find it fascinating and can’t help be a bit envious of their skills and adeptness for survival on wild food, if needed. Or perhaps, its their vulnerability to try something wild without the safety of a grocery store, fruit stand, or even home garden. Sadly, my connection to nature is not that close yet.

Monsoon Chermoula

If you read any of my food stories, you will know I look at well used ingredients in different ways. I change the preparation and remain open to the interpretation. In case of staples like garlic, chillies, turmeric, cilantro are used frequently, if not daily, in my kitchen. What I love is when I transform them in new and exciting ways.

In another life, I must have been a professional picnic-er. Perhaps in a mediterranean locale? Wishful thinking on my part. My rationale: I am obsessive about al fresco dining.

This Carrot Ribbon Salad is perfect alfresco-esque fare (even if it is indoors) because the dressing melds perfectly with airy strands of carrots.

Spinach and Cornmeal Scones with Homemade Butter

Saag, a traditional north Indian dish of long-cooked spinach and spices, Makki Di Roti and Makhan gets reimagined into scones.

Nothing is more Punjabi than Sarson da Saag and Makki di roti with a dollop of makhan, especially during Vaisakhi. This variation takes a minute to wrap your head around. Be warned, you’ll get a few jaw drops when saag is mentioned as an ingredient. Either that, or pangs of nostalgia will hit the scone eater.
