Waiting For Spring Salad & Indian Sunshine Dressing

Waiting For Spring Salad & Indian Sunshine Dressing

So you know those Little Men books, specifically the Little Miss Sunshine one? Well, for as long I have known, I have been referenced to this book character. Believe me, I have the pyjamas to prove it. I think this connection is simply because I tend to see the rainbow behind the proverbial clouds in any circumstance.

Finger Lickin’ Fried Chicken

Finger Lickin’ Fried Chicken

From the grease on your fingers to the crumbs on your lips, fried chicken can evoke childhood memories from almost anyone. Even me. Sometimes I have a fried chicken craving from my youth. Unfortunately, my family were not, by nature, fried chicken eaters. At the Lehail house, KFC was the be-all end-all of special occasions. Buckets of chicken — with its famous blend of 11 herbs and spices — along with coleslaw, macaroni salad, fries, and biscuits, made appearances on occasions like New Year’s Eve/Day. Relatives and family friends were prerequisites.

Decadent Diwali-Inspired Chocolate Twirls

No one does decadent desserts better than (sweeping generalization alert:) South Asians during festive holidays like Diwali. With the cornucopia of traditional goodies eaten, the festival of lights should really be called the festival of sweets. “Mithai” the name for South Asian sweets consists of items like “galab jamuns” “laddoos”, “barfis” and “halwas” and are a cross between confectionary treat, snack, and a dessert of sorts.

Jessie’s Incredible Chocolate Cake with Chocolate Cinnamon Icing

Jessie’s Incredible Chocolate Cake with Chocolate Cinnamon Icing

There is something sacramental about eating cake, especially chocolate cake in good company.

Growing up, my sisters and I were on a mission to do just that, but never thought to bake a cake from scratch. It never crossed our minds. We only baked Betty Crocker or Duncan Hines premixed cakes. Chocolate and even German Chocolate were on heavy rotation, along with white, confetti, lemon, orange, and even banana. Alas, there was always wishful thinking, hope even, that the cake would look just like the picture on the box.

Yam Conspiracy – Savory Spiced Yams & Sweet Potatoes

Yam Conspiracy – Savory Spiced Yams & Sweet Potatoes

I love potatoes. I realize this is quite the declaration, but it is true. Versatile. Comforting. Supremely accommodating. They are perfect any time of the day. Some days, I try to sneak them into every meal. If this does not happen, rest assured I get my daily fill. For me, after hours of writing, the end of the day is always capped off by a craving and indulgence in potato chips. I go through flavour and brand rotations – Plain. Rippled. Salt & Vinegar until my tongue can no longer tolerate the acidity. Sometimes, Jalapeno because I am hooked on heat.
