Salmon and Guava Stacked Salad with Horseradish Raita and Tamarind Dressing

Salmon and Guava Stacked Salad with Horseradish Raita and Tamarind Dressing

This salad embodies me on a plate. It takes childhood experiences and intersects them with South Asian flavours and ingredients. Each bite is a redefinition of the journey towards home.

Born and raised in Kamloops, the Adams River salmon run was a huge part of the field trip experience of my elementary school years. I admit at the time, I was dismissive of nature. My naive approach to life didn’t really understand the connection to nature. Something so far removed from now, when I am constantly humbled and fascinated by it. The cyclical nature of the salmon run hits a nerve; the no end and no beginning is poetic.

Carrot Ribbon Salad

Carrot Ribbon Salad

In another life, I must have been a professional picnic-er. Perhaps in a mediterranean locale? Wishful thinking on my part. My rationale: I am obsessive about al fresco dining.

This Carrot Ribbon Salad is perfect alfresco-esque fare (even if it is indoors) because the dressing melds perfectly with airy strands of carrots.

Waiting For Spring Salad & Indian Sunshine Dressing

Waiting For Spring Salad & Indian Sunshine Dressing

So you know those Little Men books, specifically the Little Miss Sunshine one? Well, for as long I have known, I have been referenced to this book character. Believe me, I have the pyjamas to prove it. I think this connection is simply because I tend to see the rainbow behind the proverbial clouds in any circumstance.

Gingery Carrot Magic Sauce (Dressing)

Gingery Carrot Magic Sauce (Dressing)

I HAVE A CONFESSION TO MAKE: I’M AFRAID OF THE VEGETABLE GRATER. I have Gratophobia.

I know, it’s silly. It’s true. I avoid grating anything. I leave it as the last task in the kitchen. I have been known to bribe others, namely my niece and nephew to grate things on my behalf. Or I use the grating attachment on my food processor.

Watermelon and Peanut Chaat Salad

Watermelon and Peanut Chaat Salad

Deep inside, I know that fall has officially arrived. The weather is chilly and pumpkins and apples are everywhere. But my mind — my heart, and stomach — aren’t quite ready to let go of summer. They never really are.

The upside of these warmish October days is that my parents’ garden still has tomatoes. Yes, delicious roma plums. They don’t taste as juicy and delicious as say in August, but they help to console my longing for summer produce. During the hot days of August, the tomatoes are deep red, juicy and intense in flavor. There are Beefsteaks, Roma Plums, Grape, Cherry, and so many Heirloom varieties. Each has their own flavour and personality. They are a tomato lover’s proverbial heaven.
